MartiDerm is taking significant steps towards a more environmentally friendly future: in 2024, we are in the process of implementing various logistical changes that will allow us to reduce plastic by over 1,800kg and cardboard by over 3,000kg each year in our shipping, which will lead to a reduction of our carbon footprint by 5,054 tonnes.
At MartiDerm, we understand that each small change can have a big impact on caring for the planet. We therefore continue to advance in our sustainable commitment, introducing innovations in our shipping that allow us to reduce the use of plastics and maximise the use of recycled materials.
From the implementation of 100% recycled shipping boxes and their protection thanks to the cardboard shredder machine, to the elimination of plastic in the seal, each step brings us closer to a more responsible and sustainable future.
100% recycled shipping boxes: A step towards the circular economy
Until now, the majority of our shipping boxes have contained up to 60% recycled cardboard.
This year we have taken a step further and are in the process of implementing the use of 100% recycled boxes, eliminating the need for virgin cardboard and significantly reducing the environmental impact of our shipping, which will allow us to offer more ecological and environmentally friendly packaging.
Additionally, these new 100% recycled boxes are lower in weight, which reduces the cardboard consumption of each unit and allows resources to be optimised throughout our supply chain.
It must be highlighted that in practice, this change in the implementation of boxes with a higher percentage of recycled cardboard has so far entailed savings of 3,000kg of cardboard during 2024, equivalent to a reduction of 2.5 tonnes of CO₂.
Ecological protection without plastic: The shredder machine
Another of our sustainable initiatives is the implementation of the shredder machine, which converts recycled cardboard into buffering sheets, replacing plastic packaging inside packages.
Circular economy in action
This innovative system, operating since April 2023, allows previously discarded cardboard to be reused, creating a system of circular economy within the company and ensuring optimal protection without the need for plastic. Thanks to this technology, we have managed to reduce plastic consumption to zero for the internal protection of our packages.
Sustainable process step by step
- Cardboard collection: We have set up a circuit with four stations in the production area to collect the recycled cardboard generated from boxes in which raw materials and prepared materials from suppliers are packaged.
- Shredding: The machine transforms this material into buffering sheets, ready for use.
- Preparation and protection: These sheets guarantee the safety of products during transport, complemented by manila paper to avoid potential abrasion.
Positive environmental impact
Since the implementation of this initiative, we have not only optimised the use of internal resources, but have also managed to avoid the consumption of approximately 1,100kg of plastic per year, equivalent to a reduction of 1.9 tonnes of CO₂. This change strengthens our commitment to sustainability and brings us closer to our objective of being an increasingly environmentally responsible company.
The Kraft Seal: Elimination of plastic in the packaging seal
In our commitment to reducing plastic in all stages of packaging, we are in the process of replacing the plastic seal with kraft seal, a biodegradable and recyclable material.
This change not only reduces the quantity of plastic used, but also facilitates the complete recycling of our shipping boxes, as it is compatible with paper and cardboard recycling systems.
Environmental impact
The implementation of the kraft seal will entail annual savings of approximately 729kg of plastic, equivalent to a reduction of 0.654 tonnes of CO₂ in our environmental footprint.
- • Reduction of plastic waste: 2,246 units of manual sealing and 86 units of automated sealing will no longer be used, equivalent to over 729kg of plastic per year.
- • Once this transition is complete, our shipping will be 100% plastic-free, contributing to a sustainable life cycle in each package we send.
Committed to a more sustainable future
Each one of these actions represents MartiDerm’s efforts to reduce its environmental impact and opt for a sustainable business model.
From the elimination of over 1,800kg of plastic per year to the reduction of approximately 3,000kg of cardboard, we continue innovating and seeking solutions that not only benefit our clients, but also contribute to the well-being of the planet.
