THE AMPOULE: A PIONEERING FORMAT... AND NOW A SUSTAINABLE ONE TOO
Once again, we are revolutionising the cosmetics industry by producing new sustainable packs. And of course, we are starting this transformation with our star product: the ampoule.
Ampoules are the MartiDerm product we sell most of around the world. The new sustainable packs will cut their environmental footprint in over 44 countries.
ECOPACKS
The new ecopacks are based on three principles:
- Cutting down on plastic
- Sustainable cardboard
- Reducing parts
1. Cutting down on plastic:
We have reduced fossil fuel-based plastic by more than 84%, swapping it out for a 100% compostable natural bioplastic made from corn. This material is returned to nature and decomposes in under 6 months.
Now both the blisters and the protection film our boxes are wrapped in degrade biologically, leave no waste in the environment and can be made into fertilizer.
A product’s compostability not only speaks to its natural origin but also tells us that, once decomposed, the material obtained will form high-quality compost. This lets us reduce our volume of organic waste as it can be earmarked to horticultural and agricultural uses.
All compostable material is biodegradable but not all biodegradable material is compostable.
A product’s biodegradability indicates that all the elements used to make the packaging will end up decomposing into its constituent parts by the action of natural agents such as microorganisms or fungi under natural environmental conditions but will not go on to become compost.
2. Sustainable cardboard:
All our boxes are FSC-certified, meaning the material obtained to make them is sourced from forests managed in an economically feasible way that does not compromise resource sustainability and helps maintain forest productivity and biodiversity.
3. Reducing parts:
We have also cut the number of plastic dispensers in each pack. From 30 we have brought them down to just five. And there is no secondary packaging, so we are really reducing the use of cardboard and plastic. Going forwards we will also eliminate the package inserts, completing the initiated sustainability cycle with each step.

The three pioneering ampoules to onboard the new ecopacks are:

This major and important project, shared by all MartiDerm group members, rests on three aspects:
- Reducing the environmental impact of our products.
- Reducing the carbon footprint.
- ZERO waste.
1. Reducing the environmental impact of our products: the secondary packaging we use is developed by implementing the LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) methodology and is FSC certified. Plus, every one of our secondary packaging suppliers is locally sourced.

2. Reducing the carbon footprint. Our production facility is ZERO emissions. Absolutely all of the energy we use comes from renewable sources: solar panels and aerothermal and geothermal systems.
3. ZERO waste: at MartiDerm we recycle 60% of our waste. The goal? To become a ZERO WASTE company by 2025.
